"The Journey"
The Journey Begins: The Lewis and Clark Expedition 1803
The Journey of Lewis and Clark is more than a story of an expedition.
It also tells of individuals with varying skills, cultures,
language, and customs working together to accomplish a goal.
Sound familiar!? Much communication on Lewis and Clark’s
journey was through the use of sign language. Without taking
advantage of every available form of communication coupled
with intent listening, the expedition may not have been a
success.
The Journey Continues…August 25, 2005
Today we are on a similar journey. Join us in Spokane at the
CSI Northwest Region Conference where we will reflect on our
history and traditions and discover directions to our future.
Make the time to understand demands and current trends in our
industry and take actions to help your journey be a success.
Continuing Education: The Conference is planned to provide
more than 10 hours of continuing education units (CEU’s).
This is a terrific opportunity to make gains on your education
requirements, further your professional development skills,
and take back valuable information to your company.
Spokane is a diverse City teeming with history and culture,
and a passion for outdoor recreation. Visit the recently restored
Davenport Hotel, explore the Museum of Arts and Culture (The
MAC), spend the afternoon browsing the stores of Riverpark
Square, engage in a game of Laser Tag or tee off at one of
the 20 plus local golf courses. Meanwhile, check in with the
construction happenings at the Convention Center (a LEED registered
project), located adjacent to our hotel.
Northwest Region Conference 2005. It’s one you won’t
want to miss!!

Download LEED and Green Building
Workshop information here.
TOPIC: Bid Shopping
What is ethical vs. what is legal!? Is it okay for contractor’s
to ask subs to re-evaluate their prices and find ways to
lower them? This session will review state law on bid shopping
for public works projects in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
TOPIC: Convention Center Expansion Building Tour
Here is your opportunity to tour through the Convention Center
Expansion, one of the few projects in Eastern Washington to
be a registered LEED project. This is a hard hat tour and will
leave from the Doubletree Hotel.
TOPIC: Daylighting Schools
Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol requires a daylight
factor (DF) of 2. Why? How? And by the way, what is a "DF"?
This seminar presents a historical and contemporary view
of daylighting in schools including recent research on "Best
Practices" for the Inland Northwest.
TOPIC: MasterFormat 04 Work Session
We all know that MasterFormat has changed and are familiar
with the changes. Now it’s time to take action. This
is a work session, not a review of the changes. Bring your
table of contents and let’s make the transition together.
There will be plenty of help available, and it’s
always easier when you have someone to use as a sounding
board!
Bring your questions and your MF04, too!
TOPIC: Label Reading For Green Materials.
PRESENTED BY: Chris Dixon
Material selection is a huge part of building design. But
when we talk about green materials in construction, how
does that
change what we look for? And what exactly is it that we
are looking for? What is the manufacturer trying to convey
and
how do we determine if it really is an environmentally
responsible product?
TOPIC: Education Is Selling.
PRESENTED BY: John Lape
Four of your closest friends sell the same product you do.
How do you become the "go-to" person for an Architect
when it’s decision time? How do you best educate
your client without giving the sales pitch? This session
will
help you develop strategies for focusing your presentation
on education,
based on the AIA learning unit guidelines, and still represent
your product. We will also discuss box lunches, CEU providers,
and fundamentals of educating our professionals.
TOPIC: Getting Your Product Specified on LEED Projects
PRESENTED BY: Chris Dixon
Getting Your Product Specified on LEED Projects: A key
part to designing, specifying and building a LEED certified
building is documenting compliance with LEED credits . As a
manufacturer
of products you can help the design team by providing guidance
as to how your products contribute to various LEED credits
. This session will help you understand the certification
process and types of information the designer, specifier,
and LEED
consultant need to select and specify your products. We’ll
look at actual products and how they apply to LEED credits.
TOPIC: Warranties
PRESENTED BY: Paul Simonsen
Are warranties as valuable as they seem, or just a sales
tool? Learn about the different warranty types and the
benefits,
limitations, and misconceptions of warranties.
TOPIC: Marketing And Selling With Specs
PRESENTED BY: Paul Simonsen
Specifications truly are the necessary evil. But they can
help you sell your product! Learn how to use specifications
as an
effective marketing tool. Understand the purpose of specifications
and how they are organized. Learn how to provide properly
formatted and useful specifications. Learn what the Design
Professional
views as your responsibilities and role when writing or
reviewing a specification.
TOPIC: Green Paints and Sustainability
PRESENTED BY: Ed Stein of Sherwin Williams and Randy Tessman
of Benjamin Moore Paints.
New and stricter clean air limits are on our horizon. VOC
(volatile organic compound) restrictions will affect paint
primers and
topcoats, industrial and rust preventive coatings, sealers
and varnishes. Will that have an adverse effect on the
quality of the paints we see? Manufacturers are being asked
to provide
longer lasting paints and products with higher quality,
lower-maintenance, and low VOC’s. This session will show us where we’ve
come since oil-based coatings, and where sustainable products
are heading. We’ll also look at LEED 2.2 and evaluate
how the modifications affect your specifications.
